Echo Park is a unique community full of creativity and compassion, and although many caring individuals do what they can to help alleviate the problems stemming from pet over-population, it can be overwhelming. The number of animals in need of rescuing or assistance throughout Echo Park is a concern of many residents. Some of us got to thinking how much more effective our individual efforts might be if we local animal advocates were to pool our energies…
The Echo Park Animal Alliance was founded in September 2000 in the form of a Yahoogroups discussion board. This forum for Echo Park residents, regular users of Elysian Park, animal rescuers, and anyone concerned with animal welfare filled a void in this community of animal-lovers.
In 2002 EPAA became a 501(c)3 non-profit animal welfare organization. Our mission is to "promote responsible care of companion animals within the Echo Park community through advocacy, assistance and education." We routinely feed, foster and re-home stray animals dumped in Elysian Park and other parts of the neighborhood, raise funds for local animals' medical expenses, raise awareness of animal-related services and resources at community events, and offer free pet food and shelter to the neediest members of our community. We receive no governmental funding, and are able to offer our services thanks to the individual private donations we receive from the general public.
